Julian A. Gingold
NEW YORK
Julian A. Gingold, 17, of Scarsdale, developed a methodology for analyzing
and displaying protein motion for his Intel Science Talent Search in
biochemistry. Julian combined his biochemical and computational chemistry skills
to predict the structure of possible peptide inhibitors and then constructed
computer animations to display potential areas where motion or folding could
occur within the protein. As part of his work, he set up tables of protein
motion using data derived from NMR and XRD crystal structures and showed that
the motion of protein backbone carbon atoms is concentrated in the movement of
groups of amino acid residues-it is not randomly distributed. He hopes one day
to use these techniques to streamline pharmaceutical development. After
graduating from New Rochelle High School, Julian plans to attend Harvard.
Julian, who has perfect SAT scores, is a member of the math club and enjoys
music and table tennis. He has received many honors in science, math and Latin,
as well as the Beth El Synagogue Youth of the Year award. He has also earned
distinction for his accomplishments on the piano, cello and snare drum. Julian
is the son of Jack and Faye Gingold.
