Leon Marcel Bellan
Leon Marcel Bellan, 17, of Pasadena,
devised an experiment on the effects of air pollution on artwork for
his Intel Science Talent Search project in environmental science.
He determined at what point surface darkening—primarily caused by
airborne carbon particles (soot)—becomes detectable to the eye.
Leon created test samples that closely mimic deposits of fine carbon
particles. Then he asked human observers to distinguish between
unsoiled and soiled samples in tests he conducted at Caltech.
Results showed a visibly soiled surface requires more carbon
accumulation than previously thought, and Leon believes this new
information will improve efficiencies in art preservation by
reducing the need for cleaning and resulting damage. Leon's special
interest is applying science to the arts. He has redesigned the
theater sound system at the Polytechnic School, where he has
participated in the technical theater program for the past four
years. An avid soccer player, he is also interested in computer
programming and web-page design. The son of Drs. Paul and Josette
Bellan, Leon hopes to study science or engineering at Caltech.
